BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- Holly Krzan, who played shortstop at UAB from 2004-08, is returning to her alma mater as an assistant coach, as announced by head coach Marla Townsend on Tuesday. An All-Conference USA performer, Krzan will primarily be working with the hitters and infielders.
"Holly's experience as a player and as a coach, as well as her passion for UAB, makes her a perfect fit for our coaching staff," Townsend said. "Holly excelled as a student-athlete here at UAB and is known throughout C-USA as a young, up-and-coming coach with a vast knowledge of every aspect in the game of softball."
The West Richland, Wash., native returns to UAB after spending the last year as the head coach of the Austrian junior national team, the Dornbirn Sharx of Austria. During the 2009 season, Krzan was a volunteer assistant coach for UAB and an assistant coach for the Austrian national/junior national team.
As a semi-professional softball player for the Dornbirn Sharx from 2008-09, Krzan helped her team capture the 2009 European Cup Championship and finish as the runner-up at the 2008 European Cup. Her team also won the Austrian League in both 2008 and 2009.
Krzan had a stellar career at UAB that included many highlights such as First-Team All-C-USA (2006), Second-Team All-C-USA (2007), C-USA All-Freshman Team (2004), C-USA All-Academic Team 2007-08 and Strength and Conditioning All-American (2007).
She also holds the UAB career records in games played, games started, runs scored, doubles and total bases, in addition to holding the doubles single-season record.
Krzan, a Hanford High School alum, graduated from UAB in 2008 with a degree in special education.
"Our athletes have the utmost respect for Holly and are very fortunate to have an outstanding role model like her as a coach," Townsend said. "We are looking forward to next season."
