BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Junior men's soccer player Carl Woszczynski has been selected as the UAB Student-Athlete of the Week.
The Blazers' starting goalkeeper, Woszczynski is a three-time member of the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll and was voted to the league's All-Academic Team in 2009. He is a mechanical engineering major with a 3.23 GPA.
The Columbus, Ind., native is coming off a record-breaking season in goal for the Blazers. He was a first-team all-conference and second-team all-region selection last season after setting a school record with his 0.83 goals-against average. He also recorded eight shutouts, the second-most in program history.
Woszczynski made six saves without allowing a goal in exhibition work last Saturday at Clemson. He and his Blazer teammates close out their exhibition schedule this Saturday at West Campus Field with a 7 p.m. CT contest against No. 22 UNC Wilmington.
The game will cap a soccer-filled day, as the Blazers will hold a free clinic for boys and girls of all ages on Saturday, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at West Campus Field. The clinic is filling up fast, so those interested are encouraged to RSVP with the UAB athletic department by calling 975-8593.
The UAB Student-Athlete of the Week is highlighted each Sunday night on Blazers All-Access, which airs locally at 11:35 p.m. on ABC 33/40.
