Hiram Atwater Named Preseason All-Conference USA

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- UAB safety Hiram Atwater has been named to the 2010 Coaches’ Preseason All-Conference USA team, the league announced on Wednesday.
Atwater, a senior from Decatur, Ga., was one of four defensive backs selected to the first team in a vote of the conference’s 12 head coaches.
The 6-0, 200-pound Atwater was the Blazers’ leader last season in tackles with 89 stops, including 47 solo stops. Atwater, who was a second-team all-conference choice by the coaches following the 2009 campaign, started 10 games in his first season at UAB.
Atwater also helped seal UAB’s 30-17 victory over Southern Miss last October when he intercepted a pass with only 1:05 remaining in the game, returning the pick 40 yards for a touchdown.
The conference also announced its 2010 Preseason Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Year. Houston quarterback Case Keenum was tabbed for the offensive honor, UCF defensive end Bruce Miller was named for the defensive accolade and Houston kick returner Tyron Carrier was voted as the special teams choice.
