BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The UAB softball team had a program record four players named to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I All-Region teams for the Mideast Region announced the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Thursday. Catcher Mandy Lowman and shortstop Kayla Orr received first team honors and center fielder Martina Landrum and pitcher Lauren Webster were second team selections.
The all-region teams were chosen by NFCA member coaches from each region. All the honorees will now be eligible for selection to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-America first, second or third teams, which will be announced on Wednesday, June 2 at 4 p.m. CT.
A total of 256 players from 116 different institutions comprise this season's regional teams, including first and second teams for each region. C-USA had twelve players named to all-region teams with UAB leading the league with four selections. East Carolina and UTEP both featured two players, while UCF, Tulsa, Memphis and Marshall all had one selection.
This marks the first all-region honors for Lowman, Webster and Orr, and the second NFCA accolade for Landrum, who was the first player in UAB history to receive the award last year. Landrum, Lowman and Orr were also named first-team All-C-USA this season while Webster named to the second team and tabbed the league's Freshman of the Year.
Lowman is batting at a .341 clip with a team-high .575 slugging percentage. The sophomore slugger has blasted nine home runs and chipped in 40 RBI for the Blazers this season. Behind the plate, Lowman boasts a .988 fielding percentage and has caught 13 runners stealing and recorded five pickoffs.
Fellow first-team all-region selection Orr, leads the team with 10 multiple-RBI games. The Hartselle, Ala., product has tallied 40 RBI and a .349 batting average this season. She also has recorded 18 extra-base hits including eight home runs.
Landrum leads C-USA and ranks 18th in the nation in triples (5) and 19th in stolen bases (35). As the Blazers' leadoff hitter, Landrum is batting .376 and has shattered the UAB single-season record in runs (45), hits (68) and total bases (103).
Webster (17-5) is a key component of the Blazer pitching staff that ranks 27th in the nation with a 2.07 team ERA. The freshman pitcher has posted a 1.77 individual ERA in 32 appearances for UAB and notched 168 strikeouts. The Mathews, Ala., native leads C-USA with four saves and held opponents to a .200 batting average.
The UAB softball team returns to action Friday in its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Championship. UAB is slated for a matchup with Lipscomb at 3:30 p.m. CT at the Alabama Softball Complex to open the Tuscaloosa Regional.
