BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- Now past the halfway point of spring practice, the UAB football team continued its drills Wednesday morning with a two-hour workout at the Blazers' practice fields.
With nine practices behind them, the Blazers have six more remaining, including the Spring Game on Saturday, April 17 (11:00 a.m.) at West Campus Field.
Head coach Neil Callaway said following Wednesday's practice in full pads that his team's session was better than Monday but not where he'd like it to be.
"It was better overall," said Callaway. "We're still not competing at the level we need to compete at, but I do see some good signs. We've just got to be more consistent and make sure we compete at the highest level."
One player who performed well in last Friday's first scrimmage and who continues to catch Callaway's eye is running back Pat Shed, who enrolled in January after transferring from East Mississippi Community College.
"I thought Pat Shed looked good," Callaway said of Shed's play in Wednesday's practice.
Callaway also said senior wide receiver Roddell Carter stood out Wednesday, but overall, the Blazers' play at receiver has not been what he expects.
"Roddell (Carter) made a couple good plays today. One thing I have been disappointed at this spring is the drops with the receivers. Guys that have played and who we're counting on have had a lot of drops this spring, so we've got to better in that area."
The Blazers won't practice Thursday, will have a light workout Friday morning and then hold their second scrimmage of the spring on Saturday.
