HOUSTON, Texas -- Sunday's UAB women's tennis match at Houston was suspended by rain with the team match tied 3-3 and the three doubles contests on the court.
After an hour delay and with the Blazers having to catch a flight back to Birmingham, the final match of the regular season for both teams was called.
All six singles matches were decided in straight sets before the rains came. UAB's Paula Alvarez won 6-3, 6-1 over Laura Ring at No. 2 singles, Giorgia Romeo defeated Joanna Kacprzyk 7-6, 6-4 at No. 3, and Jenny Cape picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win over Neila Starratt at No. 5.
Cape's victory was her eighth in the past nine matches, and she finished the regular season as the Blazers' leader in singles wins with a 14-5 record.
The Blazers' singles losses came from Evelien Strijker (No.1), Brittany DeFelice (No. 4) and Richole Berger (No. 6). Houston's Maja Kazemieruk defeated DeFelice 7-6, 6-3 in the last singles contest to finish, evening the team match heading into doubles play.
Each of three doubles matches was in the early going when play was suspended.
UAB wraps up its regular season with a record of 10-10, and the Blazers will now turn their attention to next week's Conference USA Championships, which begin Thursday in Tulsa, Okla.
