KENNESAW, Ga. -- Jenny Cape ran her singles winning streak to seven straight matches as the UAB women's tennis team picked up a 5-2 road win Saturday at Kennesaw State.
After securing the doubles point, UAB won four of the six singles matches. Straight-set wins from Paula Alvarez (No. 2), Giorgia Romeo (No. 3) and Brittany DeFelice (No. 5) secured the team victory for the Blazers. Those three players combined face only one set closer than 6-3 in their matches.
At No. 6 singles, it took a match tiebreaker, but Cape emerged with a 3-6, 6-3, 10-4 victory over Kennesaw State's Therese Lagerkvist for her seventh win in a row. The junior has not lost a singles match since a three-set decision at UCF back on March 14.
Kennesaw State's Vera Shkundina defeated Evelien Strijker in straight sets at No. 1 singles, and Alena Sergeychik won in a match tiebreaker over Menanteau Moolman at the No. 4 postition to provide the two points for the Owls.
Strijker teamed with Romeo to win at No. 1 doubles, while DeFelice and Richole Berger combined on a win at No. 3 to lock up the doubles point for UAB.
The Blazers (10-9) and Owls (12-11) finally completed a match that was postponed by weather twice earlier this season. UAB now has just two regular season contests remaining before the Conference USA Championships. The Blazers travel to Houston next weekend to play league foes Houston and Rice.
