BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Former four-year letterwinner Michael Biggs will join the UAB men's soccer coaching staff as a volunteer assistant coach, UAB head coach Mike Getman announced on Tuesday. Biggs, who served as the administrative assistant for the team over the last several years, will begin his coaching duties immediately.
"I am very excited to have Michael join our staff," Getman said. "He brings a lot of energy and knowledge to the team. We look forward to having him involved in almost every aspect of our program and we feel he is going to be an excellent addition."
Biggs played four seasons for Getman from 2003-06 and served as the team's co-captain during his senior year. That season, thanks in large part to his leadership, the Blazers received an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament.
"I am very excited about the opportunity to work with one of the best coaching staffs in the country," Biggs said. "I am looking forward to learning the aspects of coaching, which is something I never had the chance to learn as a player. I think we have some extremely talented student-athletes coming back next season and I am excited for the opportunity of helping them acheive their goals."
During his four-year career, Biggs played in 65 contests, starting 44 times. Playing mostly in the defense, the Birmingham, Ala. native scored two goals and tallied one assist. His most memorable tally came in the opening round of the 2006 Conference USA Tournament to help the Blazers defeat nationally-ranked South Carolina.
As a junior, Biggs earned the Coaches Award, which is given by the coaching staff to the player who has outstanding dedication and devotion to the team.
He graduated from UAB in 2007 with a degree in mathematics and a minor in psychology.
