Blazers Close Play In 11th Overall At David Toms Intercollegiate

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB men's golf team finished in 11th place at the David Toms Intercollegiate on Tuesday afternoon. The Blazers finished with a team total of 883 (297-291-295) and were paced by junior Jason Shufflebotham and redshirt freshman Thomas Sutton, who each finished among the top-30 individuals.
Shufflebotham used the strength of a career-low round of 68 during Monday's second round to help propel him to a 23rd-place finish with a 54-hole score of even par 216 (74-68-74). Not only did Shufflebotham lead UAB for the third time in four events during the fall campaign, but he matched his career-best 54-hole score for a second consecutive tournament. He also shot a 216 at last week's Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate.
Sutton continued his good start to his rookie season, collecting not only a career-best finish of 29th overall, but also setting his a 54-hole watershed mark of one-over par 217 (70-76-71) on the par 72, 7,201-yard Country Club of Louisiana Course. Furthermore, his 36-hole score of 146 also was a personal best.
Senior Blake Watts, playing in his first competitive tournament for UAB this season, finished tied for 56th overall after carding a 12-over par 228 (80-74-74). Sophomore Austen Dailey was a stroke back of Watts, closing the event with a 229 (73-74-82) to place in a tie for 58th.
Sophomore Philip Kaiser rounded out the Blazers with a 233 (82-75-76) and tied for 68th overall.
Tournament host and No. 9-ranked LSU (848) held off No. 8 Arkansas (850) to claim the tournament title by two strokes. South Alabama finished third with an 855, while Middle Tennessee State and North Florida tied for fourth overall with both schools carding an 866.
LSU's Austin Gutgsell claimed medalist honors with a 10-under par 206 (69-68-69). He finished four strokes ahead of the next closest competitor.
The Blazers will have a two week break before competing in their final tournament of the fall campaign, the Hummingbird Invitational. The event is set to take place in Cashiers, N.C. on Nov. 1-2.
