BATON ROUGE, La. - Junior Jason Shufflebotham carded a career-low round of 68 during the second round to pace the UAB men's golf team in opening day of the David Toms Intercollegiate. As a team, the Blazers are in 11th place in the 15-team tournament after shooting 12-over par 588 (297-291).
Shufflebotham opened the day with a two-over par 74 during the first round before his four-under par second round. The 68 marked the second-lowest round shot by a Blazer on the year, one stroke behind Thomas Sutton's round of 67, which he shot during the opening round of the Wolf Pack Classic (Oct. 4). The Presatyn, Wales native will enter Tuesday's final round in a tie for 15th overall with a two-round total of two-under par 142.
Sutton, a redshirt freshman, and sophomore Austen Dailey finished the opening 36 holes in a tie for 37th and 41st overall, respectively. Sutton opened the day with a two-under par 70, which was the best round by a UAB golfer through the opening 18 holes. He would finish the day with a 76 and currently is at a two-over par 146. Dailey is one stroke behind Sutton with a three-over 147 (73-74).
Senior Blake Watts carded a 154 (80-74) and is in 67th overall, while sophomore Philip Kaiser rounds out UAB in 71st overall with a 157 (82-75).
Tournament host and No. 9 LSU owns a seven-stroke lead heading into the final round after collecting a team total of 17-under par 559. Eighth-ranked Arkansas is in second overall with a 10-under 566. Middle Tennessee State (569), South Alabama (570) and North Florida (573) round out the top five.
LSU teammates Austin Gutgsell and Ken Cooper currently share the individual lead at seven-under par 137 on the 7,106-yard Country Club of Louisiana course.
