FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Four Blazers ran personal-record times Saturday as the UAB cross country team placed seventh out of 56 teams at the Chile Pepper Cross Country Festival hosted by Arkansas.
UAB's Rhiannon Johns crossed the line in a personal-record 5K time of 17:06.16 to finish seventh out of a field of approximately 470 runners.
Oklahoma State claimed the team title with a score of 72 points. Indiana finished as the runner-up with 76 points, while Texas A&M placed third with 162 points. UAB finished seventh with 348 points.
"It went well today," UAB head coach Blake Boldon said. "We discussed before the race that they needed to go out hard and they did that. They did a tremendous job of implementing our strategy. I have never seen a group of girls that have bought into team goals and vision more than this group."
Clara Cid was the second finisher for the Blazers, recording a personal-record time of 17:50.38 to place 48th. Kristina Vaughn also ran a personal-record time, clocking 18:02.73 to finish 63rd.
Stephanie Gammon finished with a time of 18:09.61, while Colleen Standridge ran to a time of 19:06.34. Bianca Le'Blanc recorded a personal-record time of 19:27.44.
"We finished ahead of the other Conference USA schools in attendance," Boldon said. "Now it's a matter of having all of our pistons firing on the same day and if that happens, I think we will be dangerous in two weeks at the league championship."
The Blazers have two weeks off from competition before returning to action at the C-USA Championship hosted by Tulsa on Nov. 1 in Tulsa, Okla.
