BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB men's soccer team, fresh off its 3-1 win over No. 10 UIC last Friday night, will look to carry the momentum when the Blazers battle the Centenary Gents on Monday at 2 p.m. at West Campus Field.
The contest will be a Labor Day special event on the UAB Campus. In addition to the Blazer pregame tailgate for UAB students and men's soccer season ticket holders that begins 60 minutes prior to kickoff (1 p.m.), fans who bring at least two non-perishable food items will receive $1 admission to the contest. Furthermore, fans who present a ticket stub from Saturday's UAB-Rice football game will gain free admission.
The Blazers (1-1) will look to remain on a hot streak after knocking off the 10th-ranked UIC Flames last Friday night in Chicago. Sophomore forward Babayele Sodade scored his first two collegiate goals, including his first-ever game-winning goal in the victory. Junior Kevin Sawchak also tallied a score en route to UAB's first win over a top-10 team since a 2-1 win at then-No. 10 Indiana back on Sept. 21, 2007.
The Gents enter the Labor Day contest at UAB with a 0-0-1 record after a 2-2 tie with William & Carey last Tuesday night. Centenary's goals were scored by sophomore Aaron Bergman and junior Mo Assi. Junior goalkeeper Rennie Walker was spectacular in the net for the Gents, recording 13 saves to keep his team in the game.
The Blazers will look to keep their unblemished record against the Gents, winning each of the previous five contests. In the last meeting between the two teams, UAB captured a 4-0 victory on Sept. 9, 2007 at West Campus Field.
