BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - With the season opener against Rice two days away, the UAB football team worked out in shorts and helmets for two hours Thursday at Legion Field. The session was spent with the Blazers fine-tuning their game plan for Saturday's game with the Owls.
Earlier in the week head coach Neil Callaway expressed that the Blazers still had a lot of work to do prior to game day, but after Thursday's practice Callaway seemed confident his team had progressed and would be ready for Saturday's contest.
"I think we've gotten better in our preparation for Rice," Callaway said. "We have a tremendous challenge ahead of us. They're a very good football team, very sound and very well-coached in every phase of the game. I know it will be a challenge, and I know our players are looking forward to it."
Callaway named senior QB Joe Webb and senior C Jake Seitz as the offensive captains, senior PR/RB Jim Mitchell as the special teams captain and sophomore CB Terrell Springs as the defensive captain for Saturday's matchup.
Saturday's kickoff is set for at 3 p.m. CT at Legion Field. The game will be televised regionally by CSS (Comcast/Charter Sports Southeast).
In addition to the regional telecast by CSS, Saturday's UAB/Rice game will also be carried on the Blazers ISP Sports Network and can be heard in the Birmingham area on flagship station WUHT-FM 107.7. The pregame show will begin at 1:30 p.m.
