BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB football team practiced for approximately an hour and a half Thursday morning in shorts and pads. The Blazers were able to return to the UAB practice field Thursday, after wet conditions shifted their practice to Legion Field the past two days.
"It was a good practice," head coach Neil Callaway said of Thursday's workout. "We had a little more energy and the tempo was up, so everything went well."
The Blazers (1-2, 1-1 C-USA) will face off against the Aggies (2-0, 0-0 Big 12) Saturday in College Station, Texas, marking the first-ever meeting between the two teams. The contest will be the 10th against a Big 12 opponent for UAB, whose record is 2-7 in the previous nine contests vs. the Big 12.
Although UAB and Texas A&M run similar offenses, the defense practiced hard this week to prepare for the Aggie offense they will face on Saturday.
"Familiarity is always good," Callaway said. "But at the same time Texas A&M's offense is not UAB's offense."
Callaway named senior DE Anthony Barnes as the defensive captain, sophomore DB Ugonna Amarikwa as the special teams captain and senior WR Mark Ferrell as the offensive captain for Saturday's matchup.
UAB and Texas A&M will kick off at 6:05 p.m. CT Saturday at Kyle Field. The game will be carried on the Blazers ISP Sports Network and can be heard in the Birmingham area on flagship station WUHT-FM 107.7.
