UAB Women's Tennis Finishes Strong In Montgomery

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- The UAB women's tennis team went unbeaten in doubles Saturday and posted four top-three finishes in singles flights to close out the Fall Blue & Gray Classic hosted by Auburn University at Montgomery.
Brittany DeFelice, who won her first-round match Friday, earned two more victories on Saturday to win her singles flight. DeFelice won a third-set match tiebreaker, 10-6, over Samford's Lindsey Mallory in the semifinals and then defeated Kennesaw State's Ayana Tanaka in straight sets in the finals.
Evelien Strijker took second place in the top singles flight, defeating top-seeded Parija Maloo from South Alabama in a match tiebreaker before falling in the finals to Ana Veselinovic of AUM. UAB's Giorgia Romeo and Paula Alvarez each split two singles matches on the day to finish in third place in their respective flights.
"I was proud of our singles play, especially with Brittany winning her draw." UAB head coach Krissy Hall said. "This was a good first tournament for our fall season. We did some things really well, and we've also seen some areas we need to work on."
Both Richole Berger and Rachel Cohen split a pair of singles matches Saturday, as well, as each picked up their first tournament match victories as UAB freshmen.
UAB also had success in doubles action, where the Blazers went 4-0 after winning just one of eight doubles matches a day earlier. Alvarez and Strijker won the third-place match in their flight over the top doubles team from Samford. The rest of the Blazers' doubles teams won by scores of 8-4 or better.
