Two Men's Soccer Newcomers Tabbed ESPN All-Americans

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB men's soccer team received a dose of good news heading into the start of fall practice (Aug. 11), as a pair of newcomers was selected to the ESPNRISE.com high school boys All-America team. Forward Kofi Gyawu (Lilburn, Ga./Parkview HS) collected third team honors, while midfielder Reed Matte (Birmingham, Ala./John Carroll HS) garnered honorable mention accolades.
"This is a terrific honor for both these young men," UAB head coach Mike Getman said. "To have two All-Americans in the same class speaks volumes about the future of this program. I am very excited and proud of both Kofi and Reed. We are expecting big things from both of them in the future."
Gyawu (pronounced Gee-ah-WOO) was selected as a third team honoree after helping lead Parkview High School to a 15-4-1 record last season and a semifinal appearance in the state tournament. He was also selected as the Gwinnett Country Player of the year in 2007 and 2008.
Meanwhile, Matte earned the recognition after leading John Carroll High School to the 2009 Alabama 6A state championship title, marking the third state title at JCHS over the last four years. This past season, Matte was chosen by the Birmingham News as the 2009 Alabama Player of the Year and earned his second straight nod as a first-team all-state performer.
