BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- With just a week to go before the 2009 season-opening game, the UAB football team went through a two-hour workout in shells Saturday afternoon, continuing its preparations for the Rice Owls.
Blazers' head coach Neil Callaway said his team still has work to do in the coming week, but he was generally pleased with Saturday's session.
"I thought it (practice) was very good," said Callaway, whose team kicks off the new season Saturday at Legion Field in a 3:00 p.m. CT contest vs. C-USA opponent Rice. "It was thud, but we did a lot of full-speed thud and it was a very good practice.
"I thought everybody was really focused and had a lot of energy. But again, it was thud so we didn't take anybody to the ground."
The Blazers began focusing more on Rice in their practices last Tuesday and continued with that Saturday.
"We're getting a little more acclimated to what Rice does on both sides of the ball," Callaway said. "I see a lot of guys focused and concentrating on what we're trying to do out there and that's a good sign."
Now into their regular game week routine, the Blazers will hold position meetings and do some running Sunday, take Monday off before getting back on the field Tuesday with a morning practice.
UAB's opener with Rice next Saturday will be televised regionally by CSS (Comcast/Charter Sports Southeast). The game will also be carried on the Blazers ISP Sports Network and can be heard in the Birmingham area on flagship station WUHT-FM 107.7. The pregame show will begin at 1:30 p.m.
