BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB women's tennis team has been honored as an ITA All-Academic Team, and three Blazers have been recognized individually as ITA Scholar Athletes.
The ITA All-Academic Team award honors programs with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.2 or higher. The overall GPA average takes into account all eligible student-athletes who competed in at least one match during the 2008-09 year.
Ceylan Engin, who is entering her senior year, along with Jenny Cape and Evelien Strijker, who are both entering their junior seasons, were named as ITA Scholar Athletes. To achieve that status, student-athletes must be varsity letterwinners with a GPA of at least 3.5 for the current academic year. They must also have completed at least two semesters at their current school.
"I'm proud of the academic accomplishments of our entire team," UAB head coach Krissy Hall said. "Ceylan, Jenny and Evelien are outstanding students in addition to being key players for us on the court. As a coach, I greatly appreciate their high level of dedication in both areas."
The ITA Scholar Athlete honor is the second academic recognition for Cape, who was named to the Conference USA All-Academic Team in April. Strijker was a third-team all-conference selection as UAB's No. 1 singles player in 2008-09.
