BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Former UAB men's soccer player Dejan Jakovic continues to make strides in the professional ranks. Jakovic was recently selected by Soccer America as one of the top Major League Soccer (MLS) players during the first half of the season. Additionally, Jakovic was one of 23 players named to the Canadian national team for the CONCACAF Gold Cup, which runs from July 3-26.
Jakovic, who is playing his first season with D.C. United after transferring from RedStar Belgrade (Serbia), has been a force in the defense for his club, starting every game this season. Soccer America lists Jakovic as a backup defender on its first half all-star team, saying he is one of the players who have been essential to their teams' success.
Jakovic will make his second appearance with the Canadian National Team at the Gold Cup next month. He started and played all six matches for Canada during the Stage III qualifying for the 2010 FIFA World Cup last September.
Jakovic and his team will begin preparations for the confederation championship, which runs this July in 13 different American cities. In the opening group phase, Canada plays July 3 in Los Angeles against Jamaica, July 7 in Columbus, Ohio against El Salvador, and July 10 in Miami against Costa Rica.
