Two Blazers Garner All-Conference Awards

EL PASO, Texas ---- UAB's Martina Landrum has been named as Conference USA's 2009 Co-Newcomer of the Year and Catherine Douglass was tabbed to the league's All-Freshman Team, the C-USA office announced Wednesday. The all-conference awards were selected by a vote of the league's head coaches.
"I'm very proud for Martina and Catherine," said UAB head coach Marla Townsend. "They have done more than has been asked of them. They are great team players and will continue to be successful players for us. I'm glad that they are wearing green and gold."
Landrum earned the Co-Newcomer of the Year award after starting every game for the Green and Gold in centerfield this season. She leads the team with a .357 batting average and has set the UAB single-season record with 34 stolen bases in 38 attempts. Her 34 stolen bases rank first among Conference USA. She has also tied the single-season mark with 37 runs scored and is poised to set new marks for the single-season batting average and on base percentage. She shared the award with Marshall's Katie Murphree.
Douglass was named to the C-USA All-Freshman Team and has played in every game for UAB this season, starting the year in left field and eventually moving to the infield at short stop. She is second on the team with a .310 batting average and 31 RBI. She has recorded six home runs, five doubles, four triples and leads the Blazers with a .510 slugging percentage.
The Blazers, the eighth seed in the C-USA Championship, will face the ninth-seeded Memphis Tigers tomorrow at 10 a.m. CT, with the winner advancing to face the No.1 seed, Tulsa, at 3:30 p.m. CT later that afternoon.
