BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB softball team (19-33, 8-16 C-USA) will play its final game of the 2009 regular season on Saturday in a rematch against crosstown rival Samford (19-27, 10-14 SoCon). First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT at Bulldog Field.
The two teams played last Thursday with Samford claiming victory, 3-1. The Bulldogs' Amy Gonzalez was able to seal the win with a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Samford's win snapped the Blazers' seven-game winning streak over the Bulldogs but the all-time series is still in UAB's favor, 17-5.
Mandy Lowman was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate in the loss for the Blazers and Kayla Harris recorded two hits and one RBI.
Samford is coming off a doubleheader split with Mercer on Thursday. The Bulldogs won the first game, 4-0, and fell in the second, 5-1.
The Blazers enter the contest coming off two wins at Memphis on Tuesday and Wednesday. UAB shutout the Tigers, 9-0, in five innings the first game and dropped the second game on Tuesday, 5-1. On Wednesday, the Green and Gold were able to jump out to early lead and cruise to a 14-0 victory in six innings.
