UAB Plays Final Conference USA Series Against Memphis

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB softball team (17-32, 6-15 C-USA) will play its final Conference USA series of the 2009 regular season, starting on Tuesday against Memphis (21-27, 6-15) in Memphis, Tenn. Tuesday's doubleheader starts at 3 p.m. CT and the series will conclude on Wednesday at 3 p.m. CT.
The all-time series between the two teams is tied at 5-5. Last season, UAB was able to sweep the regular season series in Birmingham, Ala. The two teams met up again in the 2008 C-USA Softball Tournament and the Tigers were able to knock the Blazers out in the first round with 8-6 win.
In their last outing, the Green and Gold fell to the Troy Trojans in a doubleheader at Troy, Ala. on Friday. The Trojans downed UAB, 4-1, in the first game before shutting out the Blazers, 4-0, in the nightcap. Troy's pitchers were able to strikeout 22 Blazers on the night.
Memphis enters the contest after taking on UCF on Friday and Saturday. The Tigers were able to win Friday's game, 2-0, but were swept in Saturday's doubleheader. The Knights won the first game, 3-2, and edged out Memphis in the second game, 4-3.
Leila Dolfo leads Memphis with a .322 batting average, 46 hits and 24 RBI this season. Brittany Gooch ranks second among the Tigers, hitting .315 and is 16-for-18 on stolen bases. As a team, Memphis is hitting .265 this year.
Janelle Valle has seen the most action in the pitcher's circle for the Tigers. In 133.1 innings pitched, she has posted an 8-12 record with a 2.84 ERA. She leads the team with 71 strikeouts. Memphis' pitchers are holding opponents to a .265 batting average and have a 3.43 combined ERA.
