BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Sophomore forward Andrew Barsalona scored the lone goal to lift the UAB men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Rocket City United in spring season action Saturday. The contest marked the first of the 2009 spring campaign.
"I was pleased with our overall performance," UAB head coach Mike Getman said. "We could have had several more goals, but we won and got a shutout, so I am happy.
"With this being the first game of the new year, it was good to see what this team looked like," Getman continued. "We gave up very few chances on the defensive side and worked pretty hard throughout the match."
Barsalona's goal came in the 37th minute of play. Additionally, senior John Markey came off the bench and blistered a shot which struck the post and was cleared away.
The UAB defensive line of Dean Sorrell, Sibusiso Macwele, Alandus Brooks and Jonah Stewart held Rocket City without a shot in the opening 45 minutes. Additionally, Getman was pleased with the performance of his midfielders and forwards.
The Blazers will continue their spring slate when they travel to Decatur, Ala. to participate in the ODP Soccer Showcase on Saturday, March 28. The Blazers will take on both Lipscomb and Christian Brothers on the afternoon.
