BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- After helping the Blazer softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Alabama A&M on Tuesday, senior Andrea Rogers has been named the UAB Scholar-Athlete of the Week.
Rogers hit her first home run of 2009 and collected two hits with three RBI and three runs scored over the two games against Alabama A&M. She has started all 12 games for UAB and was named to the all-tournament team at last weekend's Purple and Gold Challenge, hosted by LSU.
In 2008, Rogers started all 59 games and led the Blazers offensively with a .298 batting average. The Blazers' all-time career home runs leader with 24, she is a versatile athlete who has played everywhere from first base to catcher to outfield.
In addition to her success on the field, Rogers has posted high marks as a student. Last season, she was named to the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll, which recognizes student-athletes who achieve a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
Rogers and her Blazer teammates return to action this weekend when they host the Magic City Classic. UAB opens the event Friday at 3:30 p.m. CT against Alabama State. All games will be played at the softball complex at Spain Park High School.
