BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Natalie Mitchell, a junior member of the Blazer softball team, has been named the UAB Student-Athlete of the Week.
A biology major with a 4.0 GPA, Mitchell was one of eight UAB softball players to be named All-America Scholar-Athletes by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association last season. She is also a two-time member of the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll and a two-time recipient of the league's Academic Medal.
A recent inductee into the Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society, Mitchell played in 40 games last spring and made 34 starts, seeing most of her action at second base. The Kingston, Pa., product scored nine runs on the year, drove in six and hit the first home run of her career.
The UAB Student-Athlete of the Week is highlighted each Sunday night on Blazers All-Access, which airs locally at 11:05 p.m. on ABC 33/40.
Mitchell and the UAB softball team are preparing for the start of the 2010 season in February. The Blazers are slated to open the year Feb. 12 on the road at Mississippi State.
