BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB senior Dean Sorrell and sophomore Carl Woszczynski were both selected as a members of the 2009 Conference USA Men's Soccer All-Academic Team, as voted on by the men's soccer SID's from around the league. Sorrell earned a spot on the team for a second straight season, while Woszczynski, who was named a first-team all-conference performer earlier in the week, was tabbed to the all-academic team for the first time in his career.
"This is an outstanding award for both Dean and Carl," UAB head coach Mike Getman said. "I am very pleased with both of these young men. Both are great students, great athletes and great people. They are great ambassadors for UAB and the men's soccer program and I am glad their efforts have been rewarded."
Sorrell is a double major in Spanish and biology and maintains a 3.50 grade point average. The Birmingham, Ala. native is also a four-time Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll recipient.
Sorrell is considered one of the top defenders in Conference USA and is the only player on this year's team to have started and played every minute of every game. In fact, he has started all 75 contests since his freshman season and played 6,424 of a possible 6,754 minutes in his career, which equates to 97 percent of action. Woszczynski has also been impressive in the classroom and on the field. The redshirt sophomore maintains a 3.24 GPA in mechanical engineering and is a two-time Commissioner's Honor Roll recipient.
The Columbus, Ind. native also earned first-team all-conference honors earlier in the week for his performance in the net for the Blazers. The three-time league defensive player of the week honoree boasts a 0.89 goals against average (GAA), which is on pace to break the single-season GAA school record. He has recorded seven shutouts this season, which ranks third in UAB lore, while his 12 victories during the campaign are tied for sixth-best in program history.
Both Sorrell and Woszczynski anchor a defensive line, which has given up two of the lowest single-season goals-per-game averages in school history, allowing 0.93 goals a game.
