UAB Softball Signs Five For 2011 Season

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB softball head coach Marla Townsend announced five additions to her squad as the early signing period opened Wednesday. Five players have signed National Letters of Intent to suit up for the Blazers in 2011.
The 2010 recruiting class includes pitcher Leigh Streetman (Hueytown, Ala./Hueytown High School), first baseman/pitcher Lannah Campbell (Satsuma, Ala./ Satsuma High School), first baseman Megan McGrath (Tampa, Fla./Gaither High School), third baseman Kristen McGrath (Tampa, Fla./Gaither High School) and outfielder Kristi Morton (Trussville, Ala./Hewitt-Trussville High School).
"I am extremely excited about our 2010 class and I applaud my staff for their ability to bring this talented group of ladies together," UAB head coach Marla Townsend said. "They all have a winning attitude and an outstanding work ethic. I look for these ladies to make a positive impact on the UAB campus."
Leigh Streetman • Pitcher • Hueytown, Ala./Hueytown HS
During Streetman's junior season at Hueytown, she compiled a 30-7 record with a 0.55 ERA. Streetman tossed 25 shutouts and recorded 405 strikeouts, 61 of which came in just three games at the state tournament. Also at the state tournament, Streetman struck out a record 30 batters in 15 innings against Enterprise.
Streetman's impressive pitching earned her accolades from the Birmingham News and the Alabama Sports Writers Association (ASWA). The Birmingham News named her player of the year, all-state first team pitcher and all-metro pitcher of the year in 2009. Streetman also was named the 2009 ASWA Super All-State First Team Pitcher, Class 6A Most Valuable Player and Class 6A Pitcher of the Year.
In 2008, Streetman helped lead her team to a state championship and was named to the all-state tournament team.
During the summer and fall, Streetman plays for the Alabama Crusaders coached by Kerri Foster.
Lannah Campbell • First Baseman/Pitcher • Satsuma, Ala./Satsuma HS
Campbell pitched her way to a 14-3 record and a 1.17 ERA during her junior season at Satsuma. Campbell also recorded a batting average of .403 and slugged 10 home runs with 62 RBIs.
Campbell was named to the Class 6A all-state team and the state softball championship all-tournament team. The Birmingham News selected her first-team all-state, while the Mobile Press-Register pegged her to the all-region softball team. Campbell was named to the All-Mobile County softball team and the Alabama High School Athletic Association South All-Star Team.
Satsuma High School named Campbell its Offensive Player of the Year and the Satsuma High School Gator Elite named her an outstanding athlete. In March of 2009, the Kiwanis of Mobile County named her the county's softball player of the week.
During the summer and fall, Campbell plays for the Birmingham Vipers coached by Ken Hays. She has also played summer ball for the Mobile Thrillers coached by Derek Walters.
Megan McGrath • First Baseman • Tampa, Fla./Gaither High School
McGrath recorded a batting average of .377 during her junior season at Gaither High School, tallying 15 RBIs and 29 hits. McGrath was named first-team All-Western Conference and was a Tampa Tribune all-county honorable mention in 2009. McGrath was also named Gaither High School's Offensive Player of the Year.
In 2008, McGrath slugged her way to a .392 batting average with 18 RBIs and 31 hits. Her strong hitting earned her a spot on the All-Western Conference second team and all-county honorable mentions from both the Tampa Tribune and St. Petersburg Times.
In her freshman year at Gaither, McGrath helped her team take the District 6A title and finish runner-up at the regional championships. McGrath's batting average of .521, 15 RBIs and 25 hits earned her the Gaither High School Coaches' Award. McGrath also was selected to the All-Western Conference second team and received all-county honorable mentions from the Tampa Tribune and St. Petersburg Times.
McGrath's twin sister Kristen will also play for UAB in 2011. During the summer and fall, McGrath plays for the Florida Ultimate coached by Rob Neelen.
Kristen McGrath • Third Baseman • Tampa, Fla./Gaither High School
During her junior season, McGrath posted a batting average of .439 with 29 hits, 22 RBIs and three home runs. She was named the Gaither High School MVP and was named third-team all-state and the first-team All-Western Conference.
In 2008, McGrath was selected to the All-Western Conference first team and received all-county honorable mentions from the Tampa Tribune and St. Petersburg Times after recording a batting average of .325. McGrath also had 26 hits, 26 RBIs and two home runs on the season.
In her freshman year at Gaither, McGrath helped lead her team to the Class 6A title. McGrath garnered Tampa Tribune all-county honorable mention, All-Western Conference honorable mention and was the recipient of the Gaither High School Rookie of the Year Award. McGrath slugged her way to 40 hits, 29 RBIs and four home runs and finished the season with a batting average of .412.
McGrath's twin sister Megan will also play for UAB in 2011. During the summer and fall, McGrath plays for the Florida Ultimate coached by Rob Neelen.
Kristi Morton • Outfielder • Trussville, Ala./Hewitt-Trussville High School
Morton is a three-year letterwinner at Hewitt-Trussville High School. Morton slugged 55 hits and two home runs in 148 at bats in 2009. She also posted a batting average of .414 and 34 RBIs during her junior season.
During the summer and fall Morton plays for Team Bama. She helped the team finish runner-up at the 2009 18U Amateur Softball Association (ASA) state tournament and qualify for the national tournament in Las Vegas.
In the summer of 2009 Morton maintained a batting average of .463 with 38 hits, 25 RBIs and nine doubles. Her impressive hitting continued into the fall with two home runs, 16 RBIs and a batting average of .456 in 65 at bats.
In 2008, Morton appeared on the Rivals.com top prospect list and played on the Birmingham Vipers 16U team that was picked as one of the Rivals.com top 10 teams in the nation.
Morton also helped the Vipers win the ASA 16U Alabama state championship in 2006, 2007 and 2008.
