Day One Complete For Blazers At UNF Fall Invitational

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The doubles duo of Richole Berger and Jenny Cape won two matches Friday to highlight the action for the UAB women's tennis team on day one at the UNF Hampton Inn 9A & Baymeadows Fall Tennis Invitational.
Berger and Cape opened play in the B doubles flight with a win and then picked up a second-round victory over the flight's top-seeded pair from Indiana. Berger and Cape trailed 4-5, but the Indiana duo was forced to retire due to injury, sending the Blazer team into the quarterfinals.
Berger, a freshman, also earned a singles win Friday. After losing her first-round match in the B singles flight, Berger went into the consolation bracket, where she defeated Jacksonville's Iva Jaresova, 6-2, 7-6 (4).
Fellow freshman Krista Cole also managed a win, recording her first collegiate singles victory by a 6-2, 6-0 score over Georgia Southern's Taylor Jones in the first round of the C flight.
The victories by Berger and Cole, however, were the only singles wins of the day for UAB. Evelien Strijker, seeded fifth in the A flight, was forced to retire in her opening match because of illness. Giorgia Romeo, the No. 3 seed in the B flight, had a first-round bye and was on the court for the first time Friday when play was stopped because of rain.
Romeo will be back on the court to finish her match when play resumes Saturday at 8 a.m. The invitational is scheduled to continue through Sunday.
