Strijker Moves Into Consolation Quarters At ITA Regional

AUBURN, Ala. -- Evelien Strijker won two singles matches Saturday to advance to the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket at the ITA Southern Regional hosted by Auburn.
After falling in two close sets Friday to the No. 1 seed, Strijker took the court again Saturday and earned straight-set victories over Louisiana-Lafayette's Mia Gordon and LSU's Ebie Wilson. Strijker was pushed to a tiebreaker in the second set with Wilson but won the other three sets she played Saturday by scores of 6-2 or better.
Strijker will be back in action Sunday in the consolation quarterfinals against Julie Mazinova of Louisiana-Lafayette.
Paula Alvarez was the last remaining UAB player in the main draw following an opening round victory on Friday. But Alvarez suffered a 6-2, 6-1 loss to ninth-seeded Connor Vogel from Ole Miss in Saturday's round of 32.
Like Strijker, Brittany DeFelice won her first match Saturday in the consolation bracket with a 10-8 match tiebreaker victory over Shelby Dufrene from Louisiana-Lafayette. DeFelice was then eliminated with a straight-set loss to Soledad Podlipnik from Ole Miss. Giorgia Romeo bowed out with a consolation bracket loss to Auburn's Caroline Thornton.
