BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB women's soccer team dropped it final home game of the season to the SMU Mustangs, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at West Campus Field.
The lone goal of the game came in the 61st minute when SMU's Kenzie Scovill beat a pair of defenders and kicked the ball past the goalkeeper to give the Mustangs the 1-0 lead and eventually the one-goal win over the Blazers.
The loss to SMU was the Blazers' first defeat in their last five outings. UAB's record moved to 10-5-1 overall and 4-3-1 in Conference USA. The Mustangs' record improved to 5-9-1 on the year, including a 3-3-1 mark in league play.
"I feel like we didn't bring the emotion that we needed to today," said UAB head coach Paul Harbin. "We were coming off an emotional win on Friday, and we didn't match that emotion today.
"Even though we were flat and were not playing well, we had two or three great opportunities that we didn't capitalize one. We were not mentally tough and we allowed the little things to get us out of our rhythm.
"SMU caught us on a counter-attack and scored. SMU did what they needed to do to win the match today and we didn't."
The Mustangs out-shot the Blazers, 13-8, led by Scovill with four shots. Leslie Briggs added three shots for SMU, while Logan May took two shots.
Sophomore forward/midifielder Laura McCalla and sophomore midfielder/forward Carolyn Polcari paced UAB with three shots each. Senior forward/midfielder Danya Barsalona and freshman midfielder Emma Jane Smith chipped in one shot each.
Junior Kate Blankenship received the loss in goal for UAB, allowing one goal and recording seven saves on the day. Goalkeeper Courtney Webb earned the win for SMU by tallying five saves in the shutout of the Blazers.
UAB will return to action on Friday when it travels to Greenville, N.C. to take on the East Carolina Pirates.
