Romeo Wraps Up Weekend In Finals Of Singles Flight

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Giorgia Romeo advanced all the way to the finals of the B singles draw Sunday as the UAB women's tennis team wrapped up its weekend at the UNF Hampton Inn 9A & Baymeadows Fall Tennis Invitational.
The third-seeded Romeo won her first match of the day, taking down Indiana's Lindsey Stuckey, 6-2, 6-3, in the semifinals. She then met Charleston Southern's Brooke Pletcher in the finals, where she suffered a 7-6, 6-4 loss.
The Blazers also found success Sunday in two of the consolation singles brackets. Paula Alvarez picked up a pair of wins, including a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Florida Gulf Coast's Farah Leclercq, to move into the finals of the A consolation flight.
Jenny Cape notched two straight-set wins to advance to the consolation finals of the C singles draw, while Richole Berger posted a win and a loss in the same bracket.
No consolation championship matches were played because of a weather delay earlier in the weekend that pushed match times back.
This weekend's invitational was the third tournament of the fall season for UAB. The Blazers' final event of the fall campaign is the ITA South Regionals, scheduled for Oct. 23-26 in Auburn, Ala.
