STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- Giorgia Romeo led the UAB women's tennis team Sunday by winning the Flight A Consolation bracket in the one-on-one doubles competition at the Stony Brook Classic.
Romeo lost her opening match of the day but then won three straight to earn the consolation title. Teammate Evelien Strijker also played in the A Flight, winning her opening round match before falling in the second round to Auburn's Alex Haney, who went on to win the bracket. Romeo's loss came to Auburn's Melissa Koning, who also advanced to the Flight A final.
"Giorgia played really well," UAB coach Krissy Hall said. "I'm proud of the way she fought back after losing that first round match.
"Overall, I think the set up today gave us a chance to work on a lot of things. We were able to improve upon a lot of areas of our doubles play, so I think it was a good tournament for us to be a part of."
One-on-one doubles is a relatively new alternative tennis format in which individuals play against each other crosscourt in the half court. In Sunday's matches, players were required to serve and volley, and all matches consisted of one set played with no-ad scoring. It was believed to be the first time one-on-one doubles has been included in a Division I women's tennis tournament.
Jenny Cape competed in the B Flight for UAB on Sunday, winning one match and losing one. Ceylan Engin received a first-round bye for the Blazers in the first round of the C Flight before losing in the second round. Both Cape and Engin suffered their losses in tiebreakers.
In total, UAB posted five wins and four losses in Sunday's competition, which wrapped up the Stony Brook Classic. The Blazers went 4-4 in doubles competition on Friday and 6-2 in singles play on Saturday.
"I'm very happy with the way this tournament went," Hall said. "The girls fought hard for every point. We have some areas we need to improve, but we can work on those things over the next three weeks as we prepare for our next tournament."
The Blazers are now off until Oct. 10 when they travel to Jacksonville, Fla., for the first day of the three-day North Florida Invitational.
