STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- On the strength of four wins in the afternoon session, the UAB women's tennis team finished 6-2 Saturday in singles matches at the Stony Brook Classic.
After going 2-2 in head-to-head singles matches against Stony Brook in the morning round, the Blazers posted a perfect 4-0 record in their afternoon matches. Giorgia Romeo, Evelien Strijker and Jenny Cape each earned afternoon wins over Marist, while Ceylan Engin picked up a victory over Long Island.
Strijker and Engin both went 2-0 on the day, while Romeo and Cape each finished the day 1-1.
"I think we learned a lot from our morning matches, and we felt much more comfortable in the second round of singles," UAB head coach Krissy Hall said. "We had a very strong showing today, especially with Evelien and Ceylan going undefeated in some big matches."
The Stony Brook Classic wraps up Sunday with several rounds of one-on-one doubles, a relatively new alternative format. Individual players compete against each other crosscourt. The server is required to serve and volley, and all points are played out crosscourt in the half court.
