BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB women's soccer team dropped a heartbreaking match to the USF Bulls Friday evening, 1-0, at West Campus Field. USF scored a goal with 1:32 left in the game to gain the win.
UAB moves to 0-3 on the year, with all of its losses by a count of 1-0. USF gains its first win of the year and improves to 1-0-1.
The game was deadlocked at 0-0 and looked like it was heading to overtime when Melanie Sutherland put one in the back of the net for the Bulls in the 88th minute of the contest to give USF the 1-0 victory.
"I was proud of the way our team played tonight," said UAB head coach Paul Harbin. "We tried some new things and changed our lineup around a little bit. I thought the team responded well. We played with a lot of passion and energy.
"It ends up that in each game, we make one mistake and something like this happens. USF did a good job of capitalizing on the opportunity that presented itself."
USF held a slight lead in shots, 10-8, including a 6-3 edge in shots on goal. The Bulls were led by Noelle Pineiro, Amanda McCormick and Chelsea Klotz with two shots a piece.
UAB was paced by junior Danielle Blair with two shots, while six other Blazers had one shot each.
"I think we played better in this game than we have in our past two games," said Harbin. "But, we just have to find a way to put the ball in the back of the net before the other team."
Junior Mallori Lofton-Malachi (1-0-1) earned the win in goal for USF by recording three saves on the night.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kate Blankenship (0-3) tallied five saves and allowed one goal while receiving the loss for UAB.
"I think we played together as a team tonight better than we have in past games," said junior forward Allison Auchter. "We just have to figure out a way to finish the game.
"Tonight, we just didn't finish our chances that we had. They took advantage of the chance that they had. We need to be able to do that."
The Blazers will be back in action when they travel to Lawrence, Kan. to take on the Kansas Jayhawks next Friday evening. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. CT.
