LAWRENCE, Kan. - The UAB women's soccer team dropped a 5-2 match to Kansas Friday evening at the Jayhawk Soccer Complex.
UAB moves to 0-4 on the year, while Kansas improves to 3-0.
The Blazers struck first when freshman midfielder/forward Laura McCalla scored a goal in the third minute of the contest to put UAB up, 1-0. The goal marked UAB's first goal of the season and McCalla's first goal of her collegiate career.
"It felt good and I was excited to score my first goal," said McCalla. "It's a good feeling to help your team, but at the end of the day, the end result is not what we wanted."
Kansas responded with back-to-back goals in the seventh minute of the game by Monica Dolinsky and Kortney Clifton to give the Jayhawks a 2-1 lead.
UAB responded with a goal by junior forward Danya Barsalona in the 11th minute to tie the game at two-all.
A goal by Kansas' Emily Cressy in the 19th minute of the game gave the Jayhawks a 3-2 edge going into halftime.
In the second half, Cressy scored her second goal of the game in the 51st minute and Clifton tallied goal number two of the contest for her in the 66th minute to give the Jayhawks the 5-2 win over UAB.
"We got a good attack going during the opening minutes of the game," said UAB head coach Paul Harbin. "We were feeling pretty good, even going into halftime down 3-2.
"We just made some silly defensive errors in the second half that cost us the game. We were disorganized defensively, which had been a strength of ours in previous games.
"We had breakdowns in the midfield and in the back and we allowed easy shots. This is the first game I have ever witnessed that a team has scored on every shot-on-goal that they have taken."
Kansas tallied 15 shots compared to seven for UAB. The Jayhawks had five shots on goal, scoring on all five. UAB tallied three shots on goal, scoring on two of those chances.
McCalla paced UAB in shots with two, followed by Barsalona, junior Ayana Russell, sophomores Janet Self and Morgan Haney and freshman Tiffini Turpin with one shot each.
Dolinsky led Kansas' offensive attack with four shots. Cressy added three shots, while Clifton and Shannon McCabe tallied two shots apiece.
Goalkeeper Julie Hanley (3-0) earned the win for Kansas and redshirt freshman Ashley Park (0-1) got the loss in goal for the Blazers.
UAB will be back in action on Sunday when they travel to Lincoln, Neb. to take on the Nebraska Cornhuskers. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. CT at the Nebraska Soccer Field.
"Now that we have finally scored, it takes a load off of our backs," said junior forward Allison Auchter. "We know that we are capable of scoring now. We need to take that offensive momentum into Sunday's game at Nebraska."
