BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB football team had its final tune up for Saturday's season-opening contest against Tulsa, practicing for just over two hours on Thursday at the UAB Practice Field.
The 15-period session had a definite hint of excitement and anticipation, as the Blazers get ready to kick off the 2008 season against what many people feel is one of the league's top teams.
"I think they are really excited about the Tulsa game," UAB head coach Neil Callaway said. "I thought we had a good practice today and you can tell they are ready to play.
"Tulsa is a very good team and will be a tremendous challenge for us," Callaway continued. "We worked on the Tulsa game plan all practice and didn't go against each other live. We are going to have our hands full."
Callaway tried to keep the team fresh following Wednesday's workout in shoulder pads, going with just helmets during Thursday's practice. The second-year head coach had his team go over some final game situations and fine-tuning the small aspects of the Blazers' game plan against the Golden Hurricane.
Callaway certainly feels his team is more prepared this season and expects them to come out fighting in front of what he hopes to be a good home crowd.
"Obviously, I feel much more comfortable and ready to go this year compared to last year," Callaway said. "Just knowing the personnel and knowing what these guys can do and are capable of doing makes it a lot better."
Saturday's UAB/Tulsa contest will be carried on the Blazer ISP Sports Network. The pregame show will begin at 1:30 p.m. CT live from `Blazer Village' and will be hosted by the voice of the Blazers David Crane, along with former UAB players Dan Burks and Jake Arians. Kickoff will be at 3 p.m. and the game can be heard live on WWMM 100.5 FM radio locally in Birmingham.
