BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Former UAB softball standout Holly Krzan has taken her game to another level and another country. Krzan is currently playing for the Dornbirn Sharx in the European Softball Federation's Austrian League.
"Following college I was not ready to hang up the cleats," said Krzan. "I was instantly sold at the offer to play overseas knowing it would prolong my softball career."
Krzan joined the team in early July. The most current stats shows Krzan leading the team with an impressive .607 batting average. She also leads the team with five home runs and a 1.393 slugging percentage. Krzan is tied for the team's best on-base percentage (.667) and is 8-for-8 on stolen bases.
The Dornbirn Sharx`s are currently sitting at the top of the standings at 31-1. The team has dominated the Austrian league, winning the title for the previous six seasons.
"I am living a dream," said Krzan. "I'm doing what I truly love while being in one of the most beautiful parts of the world."
The Sharx are currently at a tournament in Prague warming up for their appearance in the European Cup, which runs Sept. 1-6. Following another tournament in Austria, Krzan will be returning to the States mid-September.
"I've made lasting friendships," said Krzan. "And I have learned that softball is more then just a sport but a way of bringing people together from all aspects of life."
As a Blazer, Krzan put up a number of impressive stats and wrote herself into the school's record books. She holds both the career (52) and single season (17) records for doubles. She ranks number two all-time in RBI (118), homers (21) and slugging percentage (.467). Additionally Krzan holds the single game record of most RBI in a game with eight (2/17/06 vs. Nicholls State).
