BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB football team had a slight change of plans to Friday's two-a-day practices that were originally scheduled.
The Blazers did not practice in the morning like planned. Instead, UAB head coach Neil Callaway took the team to the pool during the morning hours for some much-needed down time.
"We talked about it yesterday," said Callaway. "They're tired and wore out. We've had a hard camp and they've all worked hard.
"Yesterday was obvious that they were just tired. It was just was much mentally as it was physically. I just felt like it (swimming) would be a good way to freshen their bodies and their minds."
The Blazers did return to the practice fields in the afternoon, going over one hour in preparation for the second scrimmage of the season Saturday.
"We were fresher this afternoon, especially mentally," said Callaway. "We got a chance to catch our breath a little bit.
"Tomorrow will be a big day with the scrimmage. We'll come out of tomorrow with who will start against Tulsa, who will play and who will be the scout team."
UAB opens its 2008 season on Aug. 30 with it hosts Conference USA foe Tulsa. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m. CT at Legion Field.
