BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB women's tennis team improved to 6-0 on Sunday by going on the road to earn a 5-2 victory at Louisiana-Monroe. The Blazers won the top four singles flights after winning the doubles point to pull away with the win.
"This was not one of our best performances," said UAB head coach Mert Ertunga. "But as usual, we are benefiting from everyone putting their best effort on the court and fighting for each point. Thanks to our feistiness, we have won some matches despite not playing our best. This was one of those matches."
The Blazers won the doubles point by winning flights two and three. Senior Gulsah Esen and freshman Giorgia Romeo won 8-1 at No. 2 and then senior Seden Soyalp and freshman Jenny Cape sneaked out a 9-7 victory at No. 3.
Senior Antonia Nugent and freshman Evelien Strijker lost 8-2 at No. 1.
In singles play, Strijker eventually closed out the dual with her 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 victory at No. 1. Esen managed to win at No. 2 in a third set superbreaker, 6-4, 6-7, 10-1.
At flight three, Nugent pulled away for a 6-1, 6-2 victory and then Cape won by the same score at No. 4.
Soyalp dropped her match at flight five, 6-3, 6-1, and Romeo lost at No. 6, 6-2, 6-3.
The Blazers will next be in action on Tuesday when they host Jacksonville State at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
