BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The UAB softball team hosts league foe Memphis in what could be a crucial three-game series beginning Friday night at George Ward Park.
The series gets underway at 6 p.m. Friday with a doubleheader scheduled to start at at 1 p.m. Saturday. The first game of the series will mark the 500th game in program history.
UAB is 14-18 overall after dropping a midweek doubleheader to South Alabama last Tuesday. The Blazers are 1-5 in league play. Memphis is 16-11 on the year and 0-2 in the league.
Andrea Rogers and Holly Krzan continue to be the driving forces in the UAB offense. Rogers and Krzan are hitting .329 and .326, respectively, and have combined to plate to 28 runs. Leigh Walker hit her third homer of the year at South Alabama, while stealing two bases for the first time in her career.
Jennifer Nelson and Kayla Harris will split the duties in the circle for the Blazers. Nelson went 1-2 last week despite her 0.70 ERA in her three starts. She allowed just two earned runs in 20 innings and struck out 25.
The Tigers' offense has belted 29 homers this season. Leila Dolfo has seven on the season to go along with 23 RBI and a .359 batting average.
Memphis' pitching staff carries a 3.76 ERA into the contest with the Blazers. Kimberly Bossom and Janelle Valle are both 7-4 on the year and have worked the majority of the innings pitched this year for the Tigers.
This will be the first time the two teams have played since the Tigers swept the Blazers last season in Memphis, essentially keeping UAB from reaching the league's postseason tournament. Each of the three games were one run affairs with the Blazers coming up short with scores of 2-1, 4-5 and 2-1.
Memphis owns a 4-2 record in the all-time series, including wins in the last four games. The Blazers went 2-1 in Memphis' last visit to Birmingham in 2006.
