BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB women's tennis team (1-0) earned a 6-1 victory against North Alabama at Brook Highland Racquet Club on Friday. Three Blazer freshmen earned singles victories in the match, while seniors Antonia Nugent and Seden Soyalp were also victorious.
"North Alabama was a much improved team from last year and played really well," UAB head coach Mert Ertunga said. "Jenny (Cape) had a great comeback in her singles match. It was good to see our freshmen do so well for us today."
The Blazers won two-out-of-three doubles matches to earn the doubles point and take an early lead in the match. Senior Gulsah Esen and Soyalp won 8-3 and No. 2, while a pair of freshmen in Jenny Cape and Giorgia Romeo cruised to an 8-0 victory at flight three.
Nugent and freshman Evelien Strijker lost a hard-fought match at No. 1, 8-6.
In singles action, Strijker used a first set tiebreak victory to pull away for a 7-6, 6-0 win at No. 2. Nugent garnered a 6-2, 6-1 triumph at No. 3 and Cape rallied after dropping the opening set in her match at flight four to earn a 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 victory.
Soyalp dropped just one game at flight five, winning 6-1, 6-0 and freshman Ceylan Engin nearly mirrored that effort, winning 6-2, 6-0 at No. 6.
Esen lost 6-4, 6-1 at flight one.
The Blazers will be back in action on Friday at 2:00 when they travel to play their Conference USA opener at Southern Miss.
