BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB women's tennis team continues its fall season this weekend with a trip to Jacksonville, Fla., for the UNF Fall Invitational, hosted by North Florida.
The tournament starts Friday and consists of three flighted singles and doubles draws. Visit the UNF Invitational homepage at www.unfospreys.com to view the draw sheets. Results will be updated periodically throughout the weekend.
Sanctioned by the ITA, the invitational features 12 teams on the women's side. UAB is joined at the event by Bethune-Cookman, East Tennessee State, Florida International, Georgia Southern, Jacksonville, Middle Tennessee, Samford, Stetson, South Carolina State, Troy and tournament host North Florida.
"The tournament has a really high quality field," UAB head coach Krissy Hall said. "We are looking forward to the chance to play some good competition and to see where we are at as a team."
This weekend's event is the first for the Blazers since opening their fall season Sept. 19-21 at the Stony Brook Invitational. As a team, UAB went 6-2 in singles matches and 4-4 in doubles action at its season-opening tournament.
"We've worked hard in practice, and I've seen a lot of improvement from the girls over the past three weeks," Hall said. "The fall season is a great time to work on things, to grow as a team and to prepare for the spring."
Friday's schedule features two rounds of singles and one round of doubles.
In the A flight of singles, UAB's Giorgia Romeo faces Maria Vallasciani of Florida International, while Evelien Strijker battles Stetson's Breanna Atkinson. In the B flight, the Blazers' Jenny Cape takes on Stetson's Natalie Gorham, and, in the C flight, Ceylan Engin takes the court for UAB against Nikita Van Lierop of North Florida.
