ATHENS, Ga. -- The opening day of the ITA South Regional was reduced to doubles play only Friday as rain forced the tournament, hosted by the University of Georgia, to an indoor facility.
UAB's doubles team of Evelien Strijker and Jenny Cape was on the court early Friday morning. The duo lost its opening match in the A Doubles flight, 8-2, to Florida State's Lauren Macfarlane and Federica Suess.
The Blazers now turn their attention to the singles portion of the tournament, which has been pushed back to Saturday because of the rain. Strijker and Giorgia Romeo will represent UAB in the A Singles draw, while Cape will play in the B Singles flight.
Strijker opens singles action Saturday at 9 a.m. against a seeded player in Karen Nijssen of Mississippi, while Romeo is slated to face UCF's Andrea Yacaman at 11:30 a.m. Cape's opening match is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. against Lindsey Mallory of Samford.
Tournament draws and updated daily results are available all weekend on the Georgia athletics website at www.georgiadogs.com.
