JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Evelien Strijker advanced all the way to the championship match of the A Singles flight Sunday as the UAB women's tennis team concluded play at North Florida's UNF Fall Invitational.
After defeating the No. 3 seed on Saturday, Strijker continued her strong play Sunday with a straight-set win the No. 2 seed in the semifinals. The sophomore defeated second-seeded Annabelle Bares of Troy to reach the championship match. In the final, Strijker fell to top-seeded Liset Brito of Florida International.
"Evelien played very well to make it to the finals against such tough competition," UAB head coach Krissy Hall said. "She just happened to run into someone who played better than her in the finals, but I'm very proud of what she accomplished this weekend."
The Blazers also had two players competing in consolation singles brackets on Sunday.
In the A Singles consolation, UAB's Giorgia Romeo lost a tough match tiebreaker in a three-set loss to Florida International's Maria Spencely. In the C singles consolation, the Blazers' Ceylan Engin earned a straight-set win over Chanetra Brown of Bethune-Cookman.
Engin would have advanced in the draw, but the consolation brackets could not be completed because of rain that backed up the schedule on the first two days of the tournament.
Complete tournament results are available on the UNF Fall Invitational homepage at www.unfospreys.com.
This weekend's invitational was the second tournament of the fall season for UAB. The Blazers now turn their attention to the ITA South Regionals, held Oct. 24-27 in Athens, Ga.
"We played a lot of really good competition this weekend, and we fared pretty well," Hall said. "The girls are getting better and better each time out, and we will continue to work hard as we prepare for the regionals in a couple weeks."
