South Bend, Ind. ----- The UAB cross country team, competing in its third event of the 2007 season, finished 19th out of 21 teams here at the Notre Dame Invitational against some of the nation's top programs.
The Blazers participated in the Blue Division, where seven nationally-ranked teams and three others that received votes in the latest USTFCCCA competed.
Headed into the meet, head coach Ray Stanfield believed his team was capable of finishing in the top 10, especially with three seniors running and how this team had performed earlier in the year.
"I thought we really had a chance at being in the top 10," Stanfield said. "After looking at the last year's time and results, and how we've performed this year, I thought we were capable of having a really good. It was just a good day to run good, and we didn't take advantage of that."
Whitney Mays was the Blazers' top finisher at the Notre Dame Invitational for the second year in a row. Mays placed 44th out of 162 runners on the 5K course, in a time of 17:47.
UAB's top runner, Elizabeth Ambrus, was slowed by an illness and finished 83rd in a time of 18:12. She was followed by freshmen Stephanie Gammon in 87th, while Elizabeth Hilligoss finished 121st and Kristina Olsen in 146th place.
Conference USA's Rice University took home the team title, scoring 118 points. No. 7 Illinois came in second with 139 points narrowly edging Florida State (141), while No. 2 Michigan (148) took fourth, with Boston College (176) rounding out the top 5.
Susan Kuijken, from Florida State, won the individual title with a time of 16:32.
