Blazers Have Strong Showing On Day One At Stony Brook

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The UAB women's tennis team began play at the Stony Brook Invitational on Friday by winning two-out-of-three doubles matches against both Long Island and Army's "A" squad. The Blazers won at number two doubles in both matches.
"Today was good for us because we got to try some different doubles combinations against some teams we haven't seen before," said UAB head coach Mert Ertunga. "This weekend is very big for us in terms of learning experience. I'm really happy with how things went today."
Against Long Island, senior Seden Soyalp and freshman Evelien Strijker won 8-5 at No. 2, while senior Gulsah Esen and freshman Jessica Orton won by the same score at No. 3. The Blazers lost the top doubles match, 8-3.
Cape and Esen teamed up to win 8-5 at No. 1 doubles against Army. At No. 2, senior Antonia Nugent and Soyalp won 8-5. Strijker and Orton lost, 8-5, at flight three.
The Blazers will resume play Saturday.
