BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- UAB goalkeeper Wes Johnson was tabbed the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week for his role in two UAB victories over the weekend, league officials announced on Monday.
"I am very pleased Wes earned this award and received this recognition," UAB head coach Mike Getman said. "I thought Wes played terrific in the net for us last weekend. He has worked hard and is very deserving of this award."
Johnson played impressively in the net to help the Blazers to a pair of shutout victories over the weekend. Against Lipscomb on Friday night, Johnson made four saves en route to picking up his first shutout of the season and fourth of his career in a 3-0 UAB victory. Sunday, against Centenary, Johnson only played the opening 45 minutes as the Blazers built an insurmountable 4-0 lead. Johnson, who has not allowed a goal in 144 consecutive minutes, racked up five saves in the Blazers' two wins.
Johnson and the Blazers will next be in action when they host the annual UAB Classic on West Campus Field. Action starts on Friday at 5:30 p.m. when Mercer and Alabama A&M do battle. That will be followed by UAB and crosstown foe Birmingham-Southern at 8 p.m.
"Whenever we play Birmingham-Southern, it is always a good game," Getman said. "They always have a good team and it is never an easy game. It is a great rivalry and will be a big match. We are hoping to have an enthusiastic crowd to help us Friday night."
The Classic will conclude on Sunday, when Alabama A&M and BSC square off at noon, followed by UAB vs. Mercer at 2:30 p.m.
All UAB students who present a valid student ID at the gate will receive free entry to the games and free food and drinks during the contest.
