Beth Mullins, who played at UAB from 2001-2004, is returning to her alma mater as an assistant coach, as announced by head coach Marla Townsend on Tuesday. A former second baseman for the Blazers, Mullins' will primarily be working with infielders and instructing hitters and slappers.
"Beth has a vast knowledge of softball that will be an asset both on and off the field," Townsend said. "I am excited to have another former player join our staff because Beth's passion for the game and this program will light a fire under our players to perform at an even higher level."
The Fairhope, Ala. native joins the UAB staff after spending two seasons as an assistant softball coach at Georgia Southern University. During Mullins' tenure at GSU, the Eagles captured the Southern Conference Tournament Championship and made their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
Prior to working at GSU, Mullins spent a year as a student assistant coach at UAB helping with the instruction of hitters and infielders. She also coordinated and instructed Townsend's softball camps for four years.
Mullins was a key starter for the Blazer squad during her playing career. She earned Conference USA All-Freshman Team honors and helped the team to a program-best 39-22 record during her sophomore season. A four-year letterwinner, Mullins' career stats still rank among the top five in several categories in school history.
Mullins graduated from Fairhope High School in 2000 and earned her Bachelor of Arts from UAB in 2005, majoring in political science with a double minor in coaching and criminal justice.
