BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB softball team will travel to Orlando, Fla. this weekend for a key Conference USA series against the UCF Golden Knights. The Blazers (26-20, 7-7 C-USA) will take on the Golden Knights (30-17, 6-6 C-USA) in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. (ET) on Saturday and round out the series on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. (ET).
UAB is currently fourth in the C-USA standings, while UCF stands just behind the Blazers in fifth.
In their last C-USA series, the Blazers swept a doubleheader last Friday against the East Carolina Pirates, but dropped the final game of the series, 3-2, on Saturday. UAB has won three of its five conference series this season.
After winning games against in-state foes Stetson and Jacksonville earlier this week, UCF split a doubleheader against Florida Atlantic on Wednesday. The Golden Knights have won three out of their four conference series matchups.
This weekend's series marks the second meeting between the two teams. In 2006, UCF's first season as a member of C-USA, the Blazers swept the Golden Knights in Birmingham, outscoring them 11-6.
UAB has made one trip to Florida already this season, capturing the championship at the USF "The Game" Tournament in Tampa in February.
Overall, the Blazers are 23-18 when playing in the Sunshine State and 11-18 against teams from Florida.
Scouting UCF: After finishing 19-37 overall and 4-20 in conference play in their first season in the league, the Golden Knights have made a strong showing so far in 2007. Despite being picked to finish last in the preseason C-USA poll, UCF has won 14 of its last 20, including three of four this week and is currently fifth in the conference standings. The Golden Knights are led in the circle by junior Allison Kime, who leads the conference with a 0.73 ERA. Kime is 18-6 overall and has tossed 11 shutouts this season. Offensively, senior outfielder Kacie Feaster leads the team, hitting .348 with seven homeruns and 24 RBI. Senior shortstop Amber Lamb provides another big bat for the Golden Knights, batting .322 with three homeruns and 23 RBI.
