BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB women's tennis team swept Charleston Southern, 7-0, at Brook Highland Racquet Club on Friday to improve to 8-1 on the year. Freshman Magdalena Czernik did not drop a single game in her No. 4 singles match.
"This match was nothing like what the score indicates," said UAB head coach Mert Ertunga following the Blazers' shutout victory. "Charleston Southern is a much improved team from a year ago. We happened to win all the close sets so I would have to say that our experience was the key again."
UAB won two of the three doubles matches to earn the first point of the match. Seniors Annemieke Elsholz and Julia von Samson won 8-5 at No. 1, while junior Antonia Nugent and Czernik won 8-2 at No. 3.
Junior Gulsah Esen earned a close 6-4, 7-6 victory at flight one and senior Nischa Maier-Knapp won 7-5, 7-5 at No. 2. At No. 3, von Samson won the first set 7-5 before winning the second after her opponent retired at 5-0. Czernik won 6-0, 6-0 at number four and junior Samrin Tanzeem won 6-3, 6-1 at flight five. Junior Seden Soyalp closed out the match with a 7-6, 3-6, 10-5 triumph at No. 6.
The Blazers will be back on the courts on Saturday when they host Tennessee-Martin at 1:30 p.m. at Brook Highland Racquet Club.
